Savanah looked at her father. “One more, Dad. There’s time to do one more.”
“Your body is tired, Savanah. Pushing it too far will do more harm than good.”
“I’m still really angry, Dad.”
Kyle did not respond. He knew his daughter was upset, and gave her the space to work things out for herself.
“Angry or not, the shark will enjoy you for dinner just the same. It is time we get out of the water.”
He watched her laughter overcome a retort. “Okay Dad, you win.”
“No. They win. It is their ocean, and we are but borrowing space in it for such time as they allow.”
Savanah took a deep breath and held it for several seconds as she lay on her back. She closed her eyes and floated in the water. Letting her breath out slowly, she met her father’s gaze.
“I love you, Dad.”
Kyle smiled knowingly at his daughter. He would never forget what standing in the hospital next to her had felt like before they knew whether she would live. Even now, fourteen months later, the awful memories would come back to him in the middle of the night. He could hear her crying as she gripped their hands, apologizing for her tears. Apologizing for her weakness as the pain robbed her of control. He and her mother had assured her countless times that her tears were a sign of strength, not the lack of it.
Father and daughter made their way to the beach. Kyle Jordan moved closer, making sure he was on his feet before she was. He would never forgive himself if he let her progress be interrupted because he allowed something so simple as a slip on the sand.
“Dad, I can do it,” Savanah said as he reached for her. He stood almost waist-deep in the water, while her feet were barely able to touch bottom, as she took his hand.
“I know you can,” he agreed without letting go of her hand.
Savanah put her feet down, making sure they were secure as her Dad began to walk slowly backward. The transition from water to land, where Savanah’s body and spine would engage to take her weight, was a perilous one. The smallest misstep on her part, taking a wave while not being secure on her feet, could bring her to her knees.
As she emerged from the water, her legs quivered and she slowed her steps. “You’re right. My legs are a little tired,” she admitted with a guilty smile.
